High Court retirement age decision 'a sensible move'

Topic: Retiring soon

The default retirement age allows both employers and their staff to plan more effectively for the future, it has been suggested.

Speaking after the High Court's recent decision to uphold the retirement age, the Confederation of British Industry's Deputy Director-General John Cridland commented that that many businesses already allow people to work beyond the age of 65.

He said: "Eight out of 10 people who ask to work beyond 65 see that request accepted. Defeat for the government [...] would have created an unworkable situation that would have fuelled litigation and resentment."

Mr Cridland further suggested that the default retirement age is useful in allowing people to consider when would be a good time to retire.

The age charities Help the Aged and Age Concern recently claimed that the High Court's retirement age decision would not stop them from continuing their campaign to see the default age amended for UK workers.
