Health system 'must adapt' to meet people's retirement needs

With pension holders living longer, the UK's health services should quickly be adapted to ensure people's retirement needs are met, it has been suggested.

According to Age Concern and Help the Aged, institutions like the NHS must try to improve their awareness of the country's ageing population.

A Spokesperson for the age charities commented: "Now that the baby boomers are beginning to reach retirement, we are going to have to move quickly to adapt the National Health Service and indeed our medical research priorities, to reflect the needs of that change."

He added that the fact people are enjoying longer periods of retirement should be celebrated and the country's ageing population should not be viewed in a negative light.

Research from the Academy of Medical Sciences published earlier this month has shown that improved living standards have led to much greater life expectancy rates in many areas of the world.
