Pensioners encouraged to improve home security focus

Pension holders and other householders should improve their home security focus, it has been suggested.

As many as 64% of those polled in a recent survey, whose results have been published by esure Home Insurance, have left their house empty with windows still open.

Meanwhile, the firm also believes that 39% are choosing to conceal spare keys in areas of their garden, which could leave them open to burglary.

Esure Home Insurance's Head of Risk and Underwriting Mike Pickard claims that a lack of security awareness might lead to insurance problems.

He noted: "If [homeowners] can't prove to their insurer that they took steps to keep their home and contents safe then a claim may not be paid out."

Meanwhile, pension holders and other property owners were recently warned about the potential dangers posed by doorstep traders by the Office of Fair Trading.

The organisation has now launched a new campaign to address this issue.
