Pension holders and other UK drivers should be aware of the impact that potholes can have, it has been suggested, with related insurance claims said to be on the rise.

The higher volume of insurance claims that have recently been made in regards to this issue has been highlighted by AA Insurance.

Meanwhile, the firm's Director Simon Douglas has pointed out the wider implications that car owners may have to deal with.

He commented: "More commonly, our customers have either tried to avoid a pothole and hit something else, such as a kerb, or hitting a hole has caused them to momentarily lose control."

The negative impact that potholes can have on the steering systems of people's vehicles has also been emphasised by Mr Douglas.

Extreme snow fall can additionally affect the number of car insurance claims being filed on a given day, the AA suggested back in December.
