'Mature debate' needed to address retirement care issues

Politicians need to debate the subject of retirement care in a mature manner, it has been suggested.

As many as a third of those over-65s polled in a recent Help the Aged and Age Concern survey claim that care reform will be their main area of focus ahead of this year's general election.

The organisations' Charity Director Michelle Mitchell feels that the care system has "let down" a large number of people who needed help in the past.

"We need a mature debate on social care reform and hope that our care summit will be the first step in helping politicians put forward long-term solutions," she commented.

The care summit referred to by Ms Mitchell garnered the views of representatives from the country's main political parties earlier this week.

Help the Aged and Age Concern are also hoping to see politicians address the issue of fuel poverty among pension holders as the election approaches.
