It is illegal for UK drivers to 'front' their motor insurance, one organisation has highlighted.

As many as 26% of those car users polled in a recent survey from moneysupermarket.com were said to be of the belief that fronting is allowed in this country.

Meanwhile, the practice, which sees people deliberately adding the wrong name to an insurance policy, has been adopted by one out of ten of those queried.

Fronting is a fraudulent activity, moneysupermarket.com's Head of Car Insurance Steve Sweeney has emphasised.

"Those considering lying to their insurer to save money are playing a very risky game," he stated.

"A motorist claiming to be the main driver - when they are not - is a dangerous move."

Mr Sweeney also expressed concern at the number of people who do not realise the illegal nature of fronting.

Earlier this month, the Association of British Insurers revealed that car-related problems caused by severe winter weather led to motor insurance payments of £395 million.
