Older people could be given the chance to apply for the UK's state pension on the internet in the near future, with the government currently trialling an online system.
It is hoped that the service, entitled State Pension Online, will be made available to the general population as early as summer 2010, according to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
Angela Eagle, the government's Pensions and the Ageing Society Minister, believes that the online system could lead to cost savings.
"Enabling customers to apply for their state pension online will make it easier for them to access their pensions, whilst increasing efficiency and saving the taxpayers' money," she commented.
Last week, Ms Eagle also revealed the names of a number of people who are set to join the new NEST Corporation, which will oversee the government-backed NEST pension scheme.
It was confirmed that Jeannie Drake is to act as the body's Deputy Chair.
