Over 50s are battling increased costs of living by opting to make their own picnics for long drives, new research has shown.

According to figures from Saga Motor Insurance, a fifth of people over 50 have driven 50 miles to indulge in an outdoor meal.

The study suggests that with the forthcoming bank holiday weekend, more over 50s will be swerving away from fast food, petrol stations and coffee shops to curb spending on big trips.

Almost half of all people from this age group surveyed said they would be stopping off the beaten track to have their break, compared to 44% of respondents who said they would go to a pub.

Dr Ros Altmann, Director-General of Saga, said: "At a time when the over 50s are feeling the squeeze, it's not surprising that people are seeking cost effective solutions without compromising on quality."

Other ways Britons preparing for retirement are cutting costs is by holidaying at home.

A study by R3 proved that, while almost one in four people are trying to spend less on holidays, 59% of those decided to stay in the country.
