Drivers approaching retirement may find themselves increasing their speed on the nation's motorways to 80mph if a government proposal is approved.

Philip Hammond, Transport Secretary, believes the move would bring technological advances in motors in line with modern times, rather than reflecting outdated trends.

He said: "I want to make sure that our motorway speed limit reflects the reality of modern vehicles and driving conditions, not those of 50 years ago."

As the government continues to tackle the danger of uninsured driving and aims to improve road safety, it also expects the move to generate economic benefits as travel times are shortened.

Mr Hammond added: "While we must ensure that our roads remain among the safest in the world, we must also consider the huge economic benefits that can be created by shortening journey times."

Currently, up to 49% of drivers break the 70mph limit, with the government proposal hoping to bring "otherwise law-abiding" motorists back inside the boundary.
