Retirees can make the most of their free time and try to ensure they lengthen their independent lifestyle by taking habitual exercise.

That is according to fitness entrepreneur and celebrity trainer Steve Halsall, who believes physical activity gives older people better control of their lives by helping them to dodge degenerative diseases.

Known as The Body Whisperer, Mr Halsall warned retirees they should seek medical advice before undertaking a new exercise regime, but maintained it was never too late to begin.
He said: "Older people should be both patient and progressive and use the many good offers that gyms often have allowing personal training sessions for free."

With 15 years of experience, the expert suggested consistency was important, with brisk walking, yoga and low level exercises all likely to improve mobility and flexibility, as well as building a strong heart and bones.

Mr Halsall concluded: "Get a friend involved with you as it's always good to train with someone. As always take care and listen to your body.

"Eating well will make exercise more effective, help recovery and improve your mood."
