Retirees with poor eyesight may turn to tai chi to improve their balance as this can reduce their risk of taking a health-threatening fall, new research has suggested.

In a study of 40 people over the age of 70, researchers from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University found that the martial art can be used to increase balance control in older people who have eyesight difficulties.

This improved balance can prevent them from taking a tumble, while Pilates and yoga offer alternative exercises to achieving increased stabilisation.

Diet and Fitness Expert Laura Williams said: “All sorts of exercise can be helpful to older people.

“Everything from a gentle yoga class to improve joint flexibility to a low-impact aerobics class, which will help maintain cardiovascular health and bone density.”

The expert recommended adding ankle weights and bands to an exercise regime in order to make it more intense, which should lead to a better sense of wellbeing.

Alternatively, retirees who do not like this kind of activity were told they could achieve similar results by gardening or taking a brisk walk.
