Saga' long way to go in tackling care crisis

There is a long way to go to combating the care crisis as the system needs a good revamp to ensure people in retirement receive good quality service if they require additional assistance, it has been claimed.
Although the announcement by Health Secretary Andrew Lansley that the social care system will be revitalised with a £150 million cash injection is positive news, more needs to be done, believes Saga, the over 50s organisation.
Saga Head of Communications Paul Green said: “This new money is, of course, welcome - the longest journey starts with a single step. But there is a very long way to go in tackling the impending care crisis.”
Most local authorities across the UK have suffered a cut in their care spending budget and, as such, Saga would like to see the government ensure the £150 million cash injection is used effectively.
The group suggested that freeing up more NHS hospital beds and providing £500 a week for domiciliary care would all go towards closing the care funding gap.
Despite Mr Lansley’s efforts to boost the care system for retirees, Saga believes social care reform is needed sooner rather than later as postponements prolong the crisis in the care system.
