Older people seeking advice on their energy bills, research reveals

Topic: Already retired
The majority of calls received by an energy switching service come from older people in or approaching retirement, it has been revealed today (January 17th).
As uSwtich.com saw the number of customer calls increase 33% year-on-year, up to 75% of calls were made by people over the age of 60.
This may be of little surprise as those in retirement have suffered a 21% surge in the cost of energy over the last year, with the largest portion of callers requiring advice on how to cope with the impact of price hikes.
The average annual cost of energy bills now stands at £1,293, although the ‘big six’ energy companies revealed gas or electricity prices would decline by between 4.5% and 6% from February.
Director of Consumer Policy at uSwitch.com Ann Robinson said: “I think many of those who haven’t considered [switching energy providers] will be shocked to know that they can save up to a third off their energy bill just by moving to a competitive plan.”
Figures issued by the Office for National Statistics showed a 0.6% dip in the consumer price index as inflation fell to 4.2% in December.
