More than half of British employees intend continuing contributing to their pension pots with the introduction of automatic enrolment, it was revealed today (January 25th).

Some 47% of workers will stay auto-enrolled in their firms’ scheme for the benefit of receiving a boost from employer’s added contribution, a YouGov poll commissioned by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) showed.

A further 14% of Brits plan to increase their retirement pots through auto-enrolment for the tax relief it will afford them.

Acting Director of Life, Savings and Protection at the ABI Maggie Craig said: “It’s encouraging to see a significant amount of people already recognising the value of the incoming auto-enrolment into pension schemes.

“Auto-enrolment will give many people the much needed nudge to save for their retirement and break the ‘savings stalemate’.”

The introduction of a similar scheme in New Zealand has seen the number of workers saving for retirement more than double, the ABI said.

Earlier this week, the government launched a print media campaign to raise awareness regarding auto-enrolment, which will be first implemented by bigger businesses from October.
