Types of Prudential car insurance

Find out about the different levels of car insurance cover we offer.

Comprehensive

This provides you with full liability cover against accidental damage to the insured vehicle, including malicious damage, fire, theft and windscreen damage.

In addition, if you have an accident you'll receive a courtesy car and a five-year guarantee on repairs when using one of our approved repairers.

This covers:

  • Accidental damage to your vehicle
  • Malicious damage to your vehicle
  • Personal accident benefits
  • Medical expenses
  • Loss of or damage to clothing and personal belongings carried in your vehicle
Third party fire and theft

This protects your liability towards any third party involved in an accident. This could include your passengers, pedestrians, other drivers involved in the accident or damage caused to the other parties' vehicle. It also includes fire and theft cover.

This covers:

  • Liability for injuring other people (including passengers)
  • Liability for damage to property (not your own)
  • Liability for your vehicle being stolen or damaged due to theft or attempted theft
  • Liability for your vehicle owing to damage caused by fire

Optional extras

To complement our car insurance policies, we also offer a range of optional extras that can be added to your policy at an additional cost.

Breakdown cover

We have a range of breakdown packages to choose from, with cover provided by Green Flag.

Green Flag's key benefits include:

  • Unlimited call-outs (excluding Personal/Family cover)
  • In the unlikely event that they do not reach you within one hour, you can claim £10 cash back

No Claim Discount (NCD) protection

If you have a minimum of 4 years no claim discount, with no more than one fault claim within the past three years for all drivers combined, then you will be eligible to purchase No Claim Discount Protection.

Having No Claim Discount Protection means that your No Claim Discount (NCD) will not be affected by:

  • One claim made during the current period of cover, or by
  • Two claims arising in the three preceding years of insurance.

You will cease to be eligible for the benefit if claims exceed the above number. However your premium may still increase following a claim.

What does Claims Legal Assistance Service give you that car insurance doesn't?

Claims Legal Assistance Service is there for you to help you recover losses you are not covered for by other insurance cover you may have.

Examples of what you may claim for include compensation for personal injury, loss of earnings and accident repair costs if you don't have comprehensive cover.

Our uninsured driver promise for comprehensive policyholders only

No-one likes to be punished for other people's mistakes, which is why we've developed our 'uninsured driver promise'. That means that if you are a Comprehensive policyholder, we'll ensure you won't lose your No Claim Discount an you won't pay the policy excess for an accident that was caused by an uninsured driver.

You'll just need to provide:

  • The vehicle registration number and make and model of the uninsured car
  • The driver's details, if possible

It also helps us to confirm who is at fault if you can get the names and addresses of any independent witnesses.

Bear in mind that when you claim, you may still have to pay your excess. Also, if investigations are taking place when your renewal is due, you may temporarily lose your No Claim Discount. However once we confirm that the accident was the fault of the uninsured driver, we will repay your excess, restore your No Claim Discount and refund any extra premium you have paid.

  • Police reference number.
  • Car insurance policy number
  • Details of the accident
  • Details of any other drivers involved

Tell us of your Legal Assistance Service claim when you report your accident to our motor claims department. Your details will then be passed to our specialist Motor Legal claims department who will get your claim moving as quickly as possible.

What happens next?

Our Motor Legal claims department will review the details of your accident and check you have a valid claim under Claims Legal Assistance Service cover. If you have a valid claim, we will confirm that your policy will cover legal costs charged by a solicitor, as long as you follow the solicitor's advice and there is more than a 50% chance your claim will succeed. A solicitor will then be instructed to act on your behalf to pursue recovery of your losses from the driver responsible. We will cover all the legal costs of this claim in accordance with the policy terms and conditions.

Finalising your claim

Most cases are resolved through negotiation, but a minority go to Court. How quickly the claim is settled will depend on the circumstances of the accident, whether the other driver accepts responsibility for the accident and the extent of the injuries or losses being claimed for.

The amount you have to pay towards each claim. If you are over 21 years of age you can select a voluntary excess, in return for a reduction in premium.

Any claim where the insurer can't recover their full costs from another party. This would include things like theft, vandalism, hit and run or accidents involving only one vehicle. It's not a comment on who's to blame for an incident.

A non-fault claim is where the insurer can make a full recovery of their costs. It's not a comment on who's to blame for an incident.
