I want to combine my pensions

Combining your pensions, sometimes referred to as pension consolidation, means combining some or all of your pension pots into one, which you can do at any time. Some people do this when they’re closer to retirement or even when they’re starting a new job. But you can combine at any time you like.

There are many things to consider when looking to combine your pensions, such as the types of pensions you hold.

Your existing pensions might have valuable guarantees that you could lose if you transfer out of the scheme, your current pension may have higher or lower product charges, and there may also be charges to transfer your pension to a new company. You should also consider which death benefits are already in place.

Some things to think about

How can I find out what pensions I have?

A financial adviser can use the Government Pension Tracing Service to track down any pensions from old employers. All you need is the name of your old employer.

Do I have a number of different pension pots?

A single view of your pension pot could make it easier to manage your money, understand your retirement options and give you a clearer picture of what you’ll have when you retire.

Am I in the right funds?

Your circumstances or the level of risk you’re happy with may change over time – so it’s worth checking that the funds you’re invested in are still right for you. Combining your pensions could give you access to a new or wider range of funds.

Is combining my pensions right for me?

If you’re not sure about whether you should combine your pensions a financial adviser can help you decide if combining your pensions is right for you. They’ll be able to review your individual circumstances and explain the process to help you decide.
