How do you imagine your future?
Watch our new film and feel inspired by the possibilities that retirement could bring.
Jenny: "I had various jobs before I retired. It was always paperwork. Always admin. Gerry was a fishmonger. Because Gerry had been ill, I thought, wouldn’t it be nice if we were home together. So, I took the redundancy. Then, I thought, this is my time now."
Mandy: "I've always worked in catering. I’d had this thought in my mind, I'd like to do something different. We used to go to quite a lot of festivals, and there was never a very good vegetarian option there. Recently there’s been so many food intolerances going on, that I sort of like combined them two together. This was going to be it."
David: "I was working as an IT Consultant. I never planned retirement. I think the biggest challenge is, the fact that I’ve got time to think."
Estelle: "My first jobs were done out of necessity and duty. But what I'm doing now, is my real enjoyment."
Mandy: "Talked myself into it, told everybody about it, and then thought 'Oh my God what have I done, I've got to do it now' (laughter). After we sort of sold out doing the hot food, I think we were all totally amazed that we’d had such a good day. So, yes…It’s a nice feeling (laughter)….I like success!"
Estelle: "I started going to these classes and it was absolutely marvellous. And after going to the philosophy classes, I suddenly thought, the only way to learn is to start your own class. The philosophy has been a great support for me."
David: "I help leading a class on computers. The classes are quite popular, and as a sort of pay off, I'm allowed to go to other classes."
Gerry: "We’re in Riverside Studios, and I met Jo, who owns the place, about 3 years ago. And we got talking and she offered me a unit down here, and I said yes and we’ve been here ever since. It is to me, perfect. I've always loved music. And, I just enjoy it."
Jenny: "I think it does him good, to have somewhere where he makes his own decisions. And it gives me a bit of freedom, I can do what I want to do. I support a little charity called the Enham Alemain Trust. I saw they were doing an abseil down the Spinnaker Tower, and I thought yeah this is it! This is what I’m gonna do."
Estelle: "I didn't think about retirement. But now I do worry about it. My daughter and son in law are marvellous, you know, they do a little bit of, well, a lot of paying for things."
Mandy: "I've got sort of, six more years before I can get my retirement. So, it was sort of something to do for the next six years, and hopefully build up to a position where, I can start stepping back."
Jenny: "I was very fortunate that, when I worked I could save a bit, for the future."
David: "Enjoy life as you go along, and I think, if you've got the right mentality, and you enjoy what you've got, um, I think that can only lead to a great retirement."
Mandy: "If you've got an opportunity to change things, take it."
Estelle: "I really feel I'm now working (laughter). Before I was earning money, now I’m working and I’m doing something that I really love.'
Jenny: "Every day is a gift and if you don’t use that gift, you've wasted a day. And I can't, I don't want to waste a day."
